Tattoos & Aftercare
A tattoo is more than artwork on the surface of the skin. The tattooing process affects the skin barrier, making proper aftercare essential for supporting hydration, comfort, and the overall appearance of the tattoo during healing.
Tattoo healing happens in stages. In the first few days, the skin may feel sensitive, dry, or tight. As healing progresses, peeling and flaking can occur while the skin continues recovering below the surface.
It’s normal for tattoos to appear cloudy, dry, or dull during certain healing stages. As the skin naturally renews itself, the appearance of the tattoo typically improves over time, especially with proper aftercare and consistent hydration.
Yes. Mild peeling and flaking are a normal part of the healing process. Avoid picking or scratching the area, as this can interfere with healing.
Aquaphor and Vaseline are petroleum-based occlusives that sit heavily on the skin. While they lock in moisture, they can also trap heat and buildup, clog pores, and leave a film that can dull the look of your tattoo over time.
Ink District formulas are made with clean, natural, skin-compatible ingredients that go beyond simply coating the skin. Our products are designed to help hydrate, soothe, support the skin barrier, and maintain the appearance of your tattoo without excessive heaviness or buildup.

The Tattoo Foaming Cleanser is designed to help keep the tattoo clean during the healing process, while the Tattoo Balm is used to help maintain hydration and comfort as the skin recovers.
Yes. Applying excessive amounts of product can overwhelm the skin and create unnecessary buildup. Always apply a thin, even layer as directed.
We’ve created a dedicated Tattoo Healing Stages page that walks through the healing process from Day 1–30, including what to expect during each stage and how to properly care for your tattoo throughout healing.
