Tattoo Healing Timeline

Healing your tattoo,
stage by stage.

Healing times can vary based on your skin type, body, placement, and the tattoo itself — but this is a general guideline most people follow. Always follow your tattoo artist’s aftercare instructions first.

Days 1–3

Fresh Phase

  • Skin is open, sensitive, and most vulnerable.
  • Redness, warmth, swelling, and slight oozing are normal.
  • Leave the bandage on for the time recommended by your artist.
  • Avoid touching, rubbing, scratching, or re-bandaging the area.
  • Cleansing typically begins around Day 3, or as advised by your artist.
Focus: protection + minimal interference
Days 3–7

Early Healing

  • Skin may begin feeling dry, tight, or itchy.
  • Light scabbing can begin to form.
  • Tattoo may start looking slightly dull or cloudy.
  • Gently cleanse once or twice daily using Ink District Tattoo Foaming Cleanser.
  • Follow with a thin layer of Ink District Tattoo Balm.
  • Some excess ink washing away is completely normal.
Focus: gentle cleansing + hydration + soothing
Days 7–14

Mid Healing

  • Peeling and flaking are common during this stage.
  • Tattoo may temporarily appear faded or cloudy.
  • Avoid picking, scratching, or peeling the skin.
  • Continue applying Ink District Tattoo Balm as needed.
  • Skin is still healing below the surface.
Focus: maintaining moisture + avoiding irritation
Days 14–30

Late Healing

  • Most surface healing is complete.
  • Dryness and dullness should begin improving.
  • Tattoo starts regaining clarity and settled appearance.
  • Continue light daily hydration with Ink District Tattoo Balm.
Focus: consistent care + long-term skin maintenance
Days 30–45

Fully Healed

  • Surface of the skin is generally restored.
  • Tattoo appears more defined and settled.
  • Deeper healing may still continue beneath the surface.
  • Ongoing hydration helps maintain the appearance of your tattoo.
Focus: daily maintenance + long-term care
